8 months ago, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s divorce went public and became worldwide news. It was the end of the Brangelina era. The perfect image of a happy family collapsed under serious charges against the actor. The couple had been together since 2004 but only got married in August 2014. Together they adopted the Cambodian Maddox, the Vietnamese Pax and the Ethiopian Zahara, and had three other biological children, Shiloh and the twins Knox and Vivienne.
After remaining silent for all that time, Brad Pitt finally opened his heart in an interview for the GQ Style magazine. Among other things, he said he is still learning to deal with the loneliness of his home, now occupied only by him and his bulldog, Jacques.
The 53-year-old actor said he is doing therapy and cited passages from his childhood in Springfield, Missouri, that may have shaped his personality.
“I grew up with a Father-knows-best/war mentality — the father is all-powerful, super strong — instead of really knowing the man and his own self-doubt and struggles. And it’s hit me smack in the face with our divorce: I gotta be more. I gotta be more for them. I have to show them. And I haven’t been great at it.”
He also admitted alcohol and marijuana abuse and acknowledged that this may have been one of the major factors that led to his divorce.
“I can’t remember a day since I got out of college when I wasn’t boozing or had a spliff, or something. And you realize that a lot of it is, um — cigarettes, you know, pacifiers. And I’m running from feelings. I’m really, really happy to be done with all of that. I mean I stopped everything except boozing when I started my family. But even this last year, you know — things I wasn’t dealing with. I was boozing too much. It’s just become a problem,” he said before claiming to be sober for six months.
“And I’m really happy it’s been half a year now, which is bittersweet, but I’ve got my feelings in my fingertips again.”
Regarding the court case filed last year for child custody, Pitt said he and Angelina were able to reach common ground putting the kids as the number one priority. “I just refuse. And fortunately my partner in this agrees. It’s just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart. We have to do it with great care and delicacy, building everything around that. So our focus is that everyone comes out stronger and better people — there is no other outcome,” he pondered.
The actor was investigated for possible child abuse after losing control in front of his children, but it ended up with no charges.
